COURSE GROW IN UPDATE - 7 August 2008 - This past month has seen the golf course begin to actually resemble something like a golf course. After the past 12 months of piecing the jigsaw together and chasing our tails to keep ahead of the construction team and undertaking significant repair works to all golfing areas just to watch helplessly whilst nature did not play ball – the weather (much to my better halves disgust with the kids on school holiday) is behaving like it should do on the extreme south west coast of Scotland and providing the necessary natural irrigation to stimulate the required growth. The greens and tees are thickening nicely; the winter damaged surfaces along the foredune have recovered very well after a complete overhaul, although still slightly behind the majority, the fairways are becoming more and more defined through regular mowing and the roughs growing up with the lack of grazing on the site. Greens are being mown at 10mm three times a week, tees 12mm twice a week and fairways at 20mm as growth dictates. The vast majority of our work on the course at present is physically removing weeds by hand. It is an essential part of the management of a golf course and indeed the SSSI (special site of scientific interest) that the more intrusive of weeds (ragwort, thistles, docks etc) are removed from the playing areas and where in the past I may have reached for the bottle (chemical only – not despair) this is not an option on this environmentally protected site. I even had the girls (Samantha & Tina) in the office out assisting for a short while. Only within the last week has it been possible to mow paths between greens and tees complexes and then onwards to fairways. It was a specification of SNH that the paths were not to be mown out until after the last possible orchid could have shown its head and had the chance of being transported out of the way – or move the path! The spirit of the team is very positive at present, despite the conditions, as we can see the progress being made on a daily basis. As the infrastructure starts to build around us it is almost apparent that there is a new golf project on the horizon to entice the hardy golfing tourist to stay over and play another links offering in Machrihanish. Keep your fingers crossed for us for sunshine and showers (preferably overnight). more.. Mach Dunes Update - Week 53 issue 11 2008 02-01-2008 Deep into the throws of a west coast winter on The Mull of Kintyre and the project continues with momentum. With construction complete, Conor and his CAT 360 have left site for DMK golf design and we have been left on our own to grow in the golf course. more..
MachDunes Update - Week 35 issue 8 2007 09-03-2007 Conor started the period on the 4th green, shaping the area that had already been stripped of turf and irrigated to create a green of alley like resemblance (not dissimilar to Machrihanish GC 3rd green). more..
MachDunes Update - Week 30 issue 7 2007 07-30-2007 Conor the DMK shaper, is working on 11th fairway. This requires intricate machine skills as he firstly lifts turf with his bucket, shapes the imported fill to create subtle dune systems, covers the imported fill with 6” of local sand and then returfs – again with his digger bucket. more..
