Location

Unspoiled Natural Beauty.

The Kintyre peninsula is not only one of Scotland’s most secluded outposts – it is one of its best-kept secrets. Located on the west coast of Scotland, Kintyre contains a unique variety of unspoiled terrains and wildlife. Miles of gorgeous coastline surround beautiful rolling hills, wooded landscapes and a number of lochs. Machrihanish, the site of The Ugadale Hotel & Cottages and the Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club, is located on the scenic southwest coast of Kintyre, and the bustling town of Campbeltown, site of the historic Royal Hotel, is found on the southeast coast – just a short drive away. Secluded but not remote, Kintyre is surprisingly easy to travel to by air, sea, or land.

Getting to magical Machrihanish Dunes.

Today, Machrihanish is more accessible than ever. From downtown Glasgow, it’s a breathtaking three-hour journey down A83, “the long and winding road,” one of the UK’s most scenic routes. Along the way, see Loch Lomond, drive along picturesque Loch Fyne and pass within steps of the stately Inveraray Castle. If you’d prefer to fly, there are twice daily direct flights Monday through Friday and once on Sunday from Glasgow to Campbeltown as well as several charter flight options. And with the Kintyre Express fast-RIB now connecting Campbeltown with both Troon in Ayrshire and Ballycastle in Northern Ireland, you can travel by sea as well.

See below for detailed information on getting to magical Machrihanish Dunes by land, air, or sea.

By Land

Perhaps the best way to reach The Village at Machrihanish Dunes is by automobile via the A83. The “long and winding road” that stretches down the Kintyre Peninsula from Loch Lomond through Tarbert and on down to Machrihanish and Campbeltown is one of the world’s great drives, offering spectacular scenery, many interesting stopping points and attractions, and endless charm. If you’d prefer someone else do the driving, West Coast Motors offers commercial bus and coach services operated from six depots based throughout Argyll, the Isle of Bute and Glasgow.
